# Hide Claude Code's attribution in commits and PRs

Published 2026-10-29 — ai, claude-code, git

By default, Claude Code adds a `Co-Authored-By` trailer to the commits it writes and a "Generated with Claude Code" line to the pull request descriptions it opens. Both come from one setting, `attribution`, and an empty string turns each one off:

```json
{
  "attribution": {
    "commit": "",
    "pr": ""
  }
}
```

The two keys are independent. `commit` controls the trailer and `pr` controls the description footer, so setting only one leaves the other in place.

Where you put it decides who it applies to:

- `~/.claude/settings.json` for you, in every project.
- `.claude/settings.local.json` for you, in one project. Claude Code keeps it out of git.
- `.claude/settings.json` for everyone who clones the repo, if you commit it.

Two things to know. The change only affects commits and PRs from now on, so existing commits keep their trailers. And cloud and Remote Control sessions can append a claude.ai session link, which has its own switch, `attribution.sessionUrl`.

The older `includeCoAuthoredBy` key still turns up in guides. It's deprecated in favour of `attribution`.
